A backflow prevention device protects your clean, potable water from dirty, contamination water by stopping backflow. In a well functioning water supply system, the water pressure is at a high level and this allows water to flow from the source to the tap and shower.  On rare occasions, the water pressure may drop causing backflow.  The water pressure decreases when a water main bursts or when pipes freeze. Pressure will also falter when there is a sudden high demand of water, for example, when many fire hydrants are in use at the same time. A pressure that is not high enough will allow contaminated or dirty water from the ground or other unclean sources to flow up into your water system.
